Why safety culture?

Safety culture goes beyond compliance. It’s about embedding safety into everyday behaviours, language and decision-making – from the boardroom to the frontline.

  • Reduce harm and prevent incidents before they happen
  • Foster trust, engagement and wellbeing
  • Improve productivity, retention and reputation
  • Align with modern expectations for socially responsible employers
  • Promote recovery at work and reduce downtime
  • Safety culture enhances – not replaces – compliance requirements

Without a strong safety culture, businesses face higher injury rates, compliance risks, and reputational damage.

What’s your leadership legacy? We’ll support your safety culture vision of excellence – so you can weave it into the DNA of your organisation, leaving it stronger for future teams.

FAQs

The Safety Culture Programme is a 12‑month, advisor‑led programme designed to help organisations understand, measure, and improve their workplace safety culture, using the Safe365 online platform. It focuses on behaviours, leadership, engagement, and everyday practices that reduce harm – going beyond compliance to create lasting change.

This programme enhances – not replaces – compliance. While compliance focuses on legal requirements, the Safety Culture Programme focuses on how people think, act, and engage with safety every day. Compliance protects you legally; a strong safety culture helps prevent harm before it occurs.

The initial assessment is typically 90 minutes and includes:

  • Governance or director representatives (where applicable)
  • Management representatives
  • Frontline workers

Each group completes role‑specific questions to ensure a complete and honest picture of your safety culture.

The Safety Culture Programme is priced at $4,500 + GST for a 12‑month annual subscription. This includes all assessments, surveys, advisor support, platform access, and resources.

No. Assessments can be delivered:

  • In person (Auckland and nearby regions)
  • Online for organisations outside the travel zone

Delivery options are flexible and will be discussed during onboarding.

The programme is designed for EMA Members of all sizes, particularly small to medium‑sized businesses that want a structured, practical approach to improving safety culture without excessive cost or complexity. It is suitable across industries and levels of safety maturity.

The programme includes:

  • A facilitated safety culture assessment
  • Anonymous all‑staff culture and behaviour surveys
  • A detailed post‑assessment report
  • A tailored 12‑month action plan
  • Six check‑ins with an EMA Health & Safety Advisor
  • Access to the Safe365 digital platform and EMA resources

Everything is delivered over a structured 12‑month journey.

Yes. All staff culture and behaviour surveys are fully anonymous. This encourages honest feedback and helps ensure the results accurately reflect how safety is experienced across the organisation.

Safety culture is measured using the Safe365 maturity assessment, which evaluates 82 elements across 10 modules, including leadership, worker engagement, systems, behaviours, and reporting. This provides a clear maturity score and practical insights for improvement.

Organisations with strong safety cultures typically experience:

  • Fewer workplace incidents and injuries
  • Improved productivity and morale
  • Better staff retention and attraction
  • Stronger reputation and trust
  • Easier compliance through consistent behaviours

The programme is designed to deliver both people and business benefits.

You’ll be supported by an EMA Health and Safety Advisor, with access to EMA’s broader network of consultants, legal experts, training, and the Safety AdviceLine throughout the programme.

After your initial 12‑month journey, your Health and Safety Advisor will review your progress with you, celebrate your achievements, and highlight the improvements you’ve made across your organisation. You’ll also receive clear, practical recommendations for the next stage of growth.

Renewing your subscription ensures you keep building on this momentum—strengthening your safety culture year after year, embedding lasting behaviours, and unlocking even greater performance and engagement across your teams.
