“Running a business can sometimes be a lonely journey. Knowing the EMA is there makes all the difference. Help is only a call away.”
– David Sweas, Dodson Group CEO
Challenge
Dodson Group is a high-precision manufacturer based in Auckland, best known for producing advanced dual clutch transmission parts that enable supercars and race cars, from Lamborghinis to Nissan GT-Rs, to smash speed records. Founded in 2004, the company has built a global reputation, exporting to over 200 wholesalers worldwide.
As the company scaled up, acquiring its two largest local suppliers and expanding to three sites across Auckland, CEO David Sweas recognised the growing pains.
Solution
Three years ago, Dodson joined the EMA, tapping into its comprehensive support across health and safety, human resources and training, which are critical areas for any expanding manufacturer.
- After completing two acquisitions, Dodson worked with the EMA to conduct an end-to-end review of its health and safety systems, ensuring streamlined, best-in-class processes across its operations.
- The EMA also connected Sweas and his team with government decision-makers, helping get their voice heard on policies that affect Kiwi manufacturers and exporters.
- At the same time, Sweas sought to lead Dodson into the future by embracing Industry 4.0 technologies such as IoT and data-driven systems that are transforming manufacturing globally.
- The risks were real: without modern systems Dodson risked missing opportunities in a fiercely competitive international market.
- Dodson attended the Industry 4.0 programme, which is run by the EMA, presented by manufacturing consultancy LMAC, and supported by ASB. Through these workshops and personalised support, businesses learn to identify the advanced manufacturing technology that works for them.
But implementing cutting-edge systems while maintaining day-to-day operations is no small feat, especially for a mid-sized New Zealand business.
Result
Thanks in part to this partnership, Dodson has cemented its place as a world leader in specialist automotive parts. Its shop floors now run on real-time data systems, improving efficiency and freeing up managers to focus on business development and innovation.
The company ships critical parts from Auckland to the US in 48 hours and to the UK in 72, keeping top racing teams and enthusiasts on the track. Its components continue to break world speed records, reinforcing New Zealand’s place on the global manufacturing map.
